Valiant Hearts focusses on how lives are torn apart, how strangers become saviours, and how madness thrives. It’s a small-scale human perspective of the war, which tries to salvage those little acts of love and heroism from a world overwhelmed by violence. There’s not much of a challenge or a reason to revisit once you’ve finished, but the story alone is worth experiencing. Ultimately, it’s a game about warfare that’s more interested in the people and their experiences, than bullets and their targets. I could’ve done without some of the footnotes and heavy-handed narration, but it remains a beautiful, harrowing experience nevertheless.

Constantin Guys was forever bound to fail, but in failing he still helped create modernism. And while Valiant Hearts struggles to make sense of itself as a game, in its odd, playful innocence and in its focus on four friends (and a dog) it at least offers a fleeting human perspective on a new kind of war that turned out to be far, far worse in its mechanised violence than anybody was quite expecting.

Even if the starring characters don’t completely come into focus, Valiant Hearts still succeeds at conveying a human story. War isn’t all about rifles and grenades; we see soldiers playing cards, doing dishes, sleeping in bunks, and petting dogs. More than the puzzles or the overall story, these quiet moments – along with the wealth of historical background – show a mundane side of war that we rarely see in games. It may not be challenging or action-packed, but Valiant Hearts provides some thoughtful and sobering looks at what life was like on the front.

We're sure some people will lambast Valiant Hearts based on moments like the rhythm-action driving sequence a la Rayman Legends' beat-matching levels, or the QTE bandage-dressing Ana performs. But that's missing the point.
This isn't just a WWI game; it's a WWI game releasing on its centenary and intended to commemorate, not simply recreate, those events. It does that wonderfully, musical car chases, duff puzzles and all. The level of research evident here, the fact that the story never takes sides, never asks you to shoot identikit soldiers and never credits you, the player, with turning the tide on the conflict, is a big deal.

By the time you perform one of the game's final acts, a moment so brilliantly orchestrated as to be instinctual, you might wonder what it is you've learned in this sometimes sanitized, sometimes upsetting war. There's not really a preaching, obvious message. There is no obsession with the grim minutiae of killing. Valiant Hearts is a war game that recalls, in memories both cheerful and sad, that there is a person first, then a soldier, and then - if you're lucky – a hero.

As valiant an attempt as its name suggests, but ultimately this is a story simultaneously too big and too personal for the tappy trappings it's been couched within.
